Wuste, the European Car Festival that occurs this first weekend of June each year in Las Vegas, Nevada, was another hit this year, with hundreds of nicely modified Audis and Volkswagens converging on Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the big show. In previous years the event had been held at various local hotels, but this year brought new excitement having the show at a race track, complete with Ferraris and other exotics lapping around the perimeter.

For the last six years Southern Worthersee has consistently been one of the last remaining laid back enthusiast get togethers (we almost hate to use the word show) in the U.S. Designed to capture a bit of the feeling of the huge Wörthersee Treffen in Reifnitz, Austria, Southern Worthersee (or SOWO for short) takes that basic idea of a group of enthusiasts coming to a picturesque small town and hanging out for three days.

Just consider the name. The Carlisle Import, Kit & Replica Nationals is an eclectic hodgepodge of one cars and one of the widest mixes of makes, marques and automotive names you’re ever likely to encounter on any given show field throughout the summer. Located adjacent to the picturesque Pennsylvania Turnpike in the town of Carlisle, the event plays host to many enthusiast car shows over the summer season. And, as far as Carlisle’s organizers are concerned, mid-May means a call to all imported cars, kit cars and replicas. It is a mix to be sure, and while you’ll have to ask yourself (or a buddy) if that Ferrari you see cruising past is real, there’s no question that you’ll find many Audis of nearly every form in town for this event.

Forget the fact that English isn’t his first language… and maybe even his second or third. Filipe Albuquerque speaks it both fluently and quickly. When asked whether there’s any confusion jumping from the R8 LMS with its refined aero package to the less-optimized R8 GRAND-AM, he didn’t even seem concerned. The 27-year old Portuguese Audi factory driver pointed out that he has always found himself to be a quick study. You put him in a car, and he learns the nuance and the limits very fast. That adaptability probably explains why Filipe came out of seemingly nowhere at the 2010 Race of Champions and bested the likes of Sebastian Vettel, Michael Schumacher and Tom Kristensen in an upset victory for the ‘new guy’.

While an industry show like Geneva is normally geared more toward production cars, Audi chose to place considerable emphasis on its own motorsport endeavors this year. At any given time, no less than three Audi racecars were in the spotlight on the Audi stand – the new R8 LMS ultra, the Daytona-winning Audi R8 GRAND-AM and of course the newly named Audi RS 5 DTM. These competition models, as well as some of Audi’s production launches, were also presented by a large number of Audi Sport’s own factory drivers.
