The customer teams of last year’s winner Audi experienced one of the toughest events of the Nürburgring 24 Hours this year. Heavy rain forced race control during the night to interrupt the race for more than nine hours. Numerous accidents caused a treacherous mix of oil, mud and rain water on the track. Three Audi R8 LMS ultra cars had accidents in these critical conditions and retired. Fawkham. Martin Tomczyk wasn’t able to celebrate his maiden pole position for BMW for too long. After his fastest time in qualifying for the second DTM season round at Brands Hatch, it was found in scrutineering of his car that the 2011 champion’s BMW M3 DTM was underweight. As a result, the stewards of the meeting excluded the 31-year old from qualifying, but he is allowed to start the race on Sunday (12.30 hrs local time/13.30 hrs CET) from last place on the grid. Fourtitude readers are likely more familiar with Canadian-born Chinese driver Darryl O’Young for his ongoing association with Audi. O’Young is a regular in the Audi R8 LMS, including victory at the Bathurst 12 Hours in 2011 and 2012, as well as an occasional fill-in for the DTM.
