The votes are in and the five cylinder, 2.5 TFSI engine is the International Engine of the Year in the 2 to 2.5L category.
“The five-cylinder engine has one of the longest traditions within the company and we are continually developing it,” says Dr. Stegan Knirsch, Member of the Board for Technical Development.
The judges, 65 motorsport journalists, praised the engine for its character and performance, but most of all for reminding them of the Quattro.
The engine “is not just impressive in terms of its superb performance, it also has a high recognition factor,” they say. “Through this five-cylinder engine, Audi is allowing the [Group B] dream to live on.”
The engine is the centerpiece of the RS Q3 and the RS 3 Sportback and will find its way into the new Audi TT RS.
The new RS Q3 performance model will see further improvements. A new radiator and a better fuel pump will give the engine an extra 27 hp and 12 lb-ft of torque.
The International Engine of the Year award has been around since 1999, and in that time Audi has won an impressive 12 times.
