César Campaniço, from Portugal, and Mikko Eskelinen, from Finland, clinched his first win in the series during current season after starting on pole position. Drivex and Ray Racing Team also finished in podium finishes.
The Portuguese team Team NovaDriver has won its first race during 2012 campaign in the Spanish GT / IBER GT championship. Today´s race was the first one in endurance format and was counting towards Endurance Trophy Iber GT.
The race, despite there was rain threatening early in the morning, finally began in dry conditions. However an incident on first lap forced to retire or slowed down an important number of favorites for the win. César Campaniço kept the lead in the start but, behind him, a crash retired Sports&You Mercedes SLS AMG GT3, driven by Luis Silva and Antonio Coimbra, or Team NovaDriver Audi R8 LMS ultra, with Manuel Giao, Carlos Vieira and Lourenço Beirao da Veiga. Others, such as Autorlando Porsche or GoodSense Racing Team Lamborghini Gallardo LP600+, leading until today with Patrick Cunha and José Ramos, were back to the race but losing laps.
This mayhem at the start didn´t affect Campaniço but later he was overtaken by Miguel Ángel de Castro, again very fast for Drivex and its competitive Porsche 997 RSR. Anyway, Matheus Stumpf was the man to watch because, overtaking both Campaniço and de Castro, was a strong leader for a while. By the halfway point anyway, Campaniço was again first and scoring very important points for overall classification. At the end of two hours and ten minutes of race, Campaniço and Eskelinen took the victory. De Castro and his new teammate Alan Sicart finished in second and Ray Racing Team was third, Fernando Moreira´s team after a very good race coming from its drivers: Miguel Ramos, Joao Ramos and Hugo Godinho.
Autorlando Sport, recovering many places over the course of the race, was 4th with Álvaro Fontes, Jesús Díez Villarroel and Gianluca Carboni as drivers. Spaniard-Italian drivers scored a good number of points for the overall championship. Stumpf, the man of the race at the start, was finally 5th with his ACL by Rodrive´s Ford GT shared with Rui Lapa and David Saraiva. Jorge Queiroz and “Pepe” were today the best drivers classified for GoodSense Racing Team, with a Lamborghini Gallardo LP600+.
In GTS, Rafael Unzurrunzaga won at the wheel of Mosler MT900R and, once again, Francesc Gutiérrez and Luis Villalba in GT Light. Catalunya´s drivers were a fierce opposition coming from Salvador Tineo, Borja Signes and Félix Porteiro, with BMW M3 -3rd after one hour and second at the end-, and Joffrey Didier, Ángela Negrao and Nuno Batista, with another GoodSense car – Lotus Evora-, who were second and third-.
Next meeting for the championship will be at Motorland Aragón on 16th-17th June, a track making its debut in the series. Campaniço and Eskelinen will arrive as championship leaders in Aragón, but with de Castro one point behind.
