The Lamborghini Huracan has so many different variations that rich people everywhere are starting to lose track, but the Italian automaker has added yet another model to the Huracan lineup.
The Lamborghini Huracán Rear-Wheel Drive Spyder debuted at a private event the night before the 2016 L.A. Auto Show. The RWD Spyder joins the all-wheel-drive coupe, AWD Spyder and the rear-drive coupe, which brings the number of variants to a total of four, without including all the special edition models also available.
The RWD Spyder stands out from the rest of the Huracán family visually with a unique front and rear design that looks more aggressive than its all-wheel-drive siblings. Larger front air intakes help increase down pressure on the front axle, and the mid-mounted engine gets a new slatted cover unique to the Spyder. The soft-top can be opened at speeds of up to 31 mph and takes just 17 seconds to open and close.
The new model is still powered by a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 that sends 580 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque exclusively to the rear wheels (slightly less than the AWD Spyder’s 602 hp). The roadster can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds (0.2 seconds slower than the AWD model) and top speed is rated at 198 mph (top speed for the AWD model is 201 mph). A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is the only one available, and the Spyder also includes a launch control function.
Dry weight of the convertible is 3,327 pounds, meaning it’s 192 pounds heavier than the AWD model. The Huracan gets tweaks to support the new RWD layout including recalibrated stability and traction controls and a new steering setup, among others. Driving modes have also been optimized to suit the new RWD model.
The Lamborghini Huracán Rear-Wheel Drive Spyder will be available starting in January 2017 and will be priced between the RWD coupe and AWD coupe.
One thing we know for sure is that there are probably even more Huracán variants and special edition models on the way.
