Funny thing about a new model launch, some of the most exciting news for owners of other Audi models can often be found by dissecting the photography released by Audi. Today was the internet reveal of the new RS 5 Cabriolet and while we are already seriously lusting over the car, we’re also highly intrigued by one minor production difference – the rear deck lid spoiler.
When Audi launched the RS 5 Cabriolet, the company went ahead and installed an active rear spoiler similar to the one seen on the TT, the A7 and the R8. Basically the unit raises at speed to increase downforce and improve the car’s grip through aerodynamic aid. It’s trick technology first launched on the Porsche 911 (Type 964). And while a cool feature, Audi was presented with a challenge in the case of the RS 5 Cabriolet.
For the coupe, the active spoiler is an RS 5 only affair. A5 and S5 owners can’t even add it as an option. Likely it’s costly and it required Audi to develop a whole new deck lid stamping in order to add it to the coupe – a costly affair, but one apparently worth it for the volume of sales Audi enjoys with the RS 5 coupe.
By the very nature of market demand, the RS 5 Cabriolet will be a more exclusive car. There are fewer buyers in the ultimate performance convertible segment and as such it appears that Audi chose to forego adding the active spoiler to the cabriolet’s trunk. Instead, the company developed a new fixed carbon fiber lip spoiler that may not be trick and active at speed, but also may look even cooler and save more weight since it’s made of carbon fiber and not motorized. The piece immediately grabbed our attention.
Now to be clear, we’re making an assumption here that this piece will fit the A5 and S5 coupes without the active spoiler. We’re waiting for an early adopter reader or OE+ specializing shop like EuroPrice or OEMplus to try it out. We suspect we know the answer though and it will fit and obviously it will fit on the A5/S5 Cabriolet. So A5 and S5 owners take note… this will be one very cool mod.
