Audi of America Wants a Wagon for Aficionados

With the Audi RS4 Avant getting closer every day, it’s harder and harder not to think about whether or not it will be offered in America. Recent comments from Audi of America’s director of product planning, Barry Hoch, hint that there’s at least hope.

“There is a small group of aficionados who could benefit from an additional wagon from Audi,” Hoch told The Drive. “It’s certainly something that we see over in Europe, and I want it.”

The RS4 Avant was spotted testing on the Nurburgring back in April. Expected to come with the same 2.9-liter turbocharged V6 that powers the RS5, the RS4 sounds like a powerful beast, indeed. The lack of an A4 Avant in North America, however, makes the prospects of an RS4 Avant coming here a little more dubious.

We already know that Audi Sport—formerly Quattro GmbH—is bringing 8 RS cars to America. With the R8, TT RS, RS3, and RS5 already here or officially announced, that leaves only five options.

Meanwhile, Audi Sport CEO Stephen Winkelmann said that his sub-brand would be less focused on the European market.

“To get out of the ‘Euro-centric world’ we are in today, most of the cars we are going to launch in the future will be ‘world cars’ or ‘global cars’,” Winkelmann told Motoring.com.au in March.

That, according to him, means SUVs, which Hoch also expressed a desire to see more of, but the latter’s comments give us hope that there is room for a cult favorite to join the lineup.
