Sunday was Audi’s day at the Hockenheimring in Germany. Following an Audi win in the World Rallycross Championship, Jamie Green took the checkered flag for the second race of DTM’s season-opening weekend.
The race started with a big crash, precipitated by an Audi near the back. On the restart, following a safety car period, Jamie Green took off, to lead the rain-soaked race until the end.
“The conditions today were really anything but easy,” Green said. “Achieving a victory on the first weekend of a new racing season is always good.”
Green’s first place finish was encouraging for Audi, too. “Jamie (Green) handled this superbly and truly deserves this victory,” said Dieter Gass, head of Audi Motorsport. “It was a fantastic result for us.”
The first race of the season, meanwhile, wasn’t quite as successful. Despite spending some time in second place, Audi’s Mike Rockenfeller lost the position to former F1 driver Timo Glock to finish Race 1 in third position, the best of Audi’s six drivers.
After two races and one weekend, Audi is in second place in both the drivers’ and the teams’ championship standings.
Jamie Green (26) trails Mercedes’ Lucas Auer (40) by 14 points, while Audi (36 pts) is 17 points behind Mercedes (53 pts) in the team standings.
The teams will be back on the track at the Lausitzring in two weeks for the second of nine races this season.
