There’s news this morning surrounding Audi’s upcoming Tesla Model X competitor, at least in regards to its production. Based on the e-tron quattro concept revealed last month in Frankfurt, the Audi is expected to be called the Q6 e-tron when it surfaces in full production trim.
A report yesterday from Belgian newspaper De Morgan (found via the Motley Fool investment blog) quotes a union leader dealing with the factory Audi operates in Brussels. According to the story, company officials confirmed to the union that Audi would build the new electric model there beginning in 2018.
Neither Audi or its parent Volkswagen have confirmed the report. That said, they also haven’t denied it.
Brussels is a Volkswagen owned factor, though Audi took it over shortly before Ingolstadt began production of the A1 range. The challenge with the A1 is that profit margins are not terribly high on this model positioned at the bottom of Audi’s model range. At the same time, Belgian wages are rather high. It is expected that the A1 will move to another lower wage factory when it transfers to its next generation based on the same MQB matrix that currently houses the A3 and TT.
