Rumor: New Audi A3 Body Styles Could Include MPV (with Rendering by Theophilus Chin)

One rumor swirling out of Ingolstadt (via the often reliable Georg Kacher of Automobile Magazine) is that this car’s range is about to be aggressively expanded. Among the mix says Kacher is a Sportback allroad crossover, a four-passenger TT replacing the current A3 Sportback and even a compact MPV van.

Like it or not, small MPVs in the luxury market are or will become a thing. BMW has already revealed its 2 Series Grand Tourer, while Mercedes-Benz is readying their latest B-class.

Considering this, render-artist extraordinaire Theophilus Chin has speculated on the look of an Audi MPV by applying many of the latest Audi design cues we’ve seen in the new A4 to what looks more like an A3-sized MPV. He’s actually done front and rear shots, so we’d suggest you check out the additional shots and in high-res at his website HERE.

At the same time, some model segments are being considered for the axe. While the existing sedan and Cabriolet models are safe, the slower-selling 3-door hatchback is rumored to be potentially axed. As for the Sportback, suggestion that it switch over to the TT range (also on Audi’s MQB architecture) could mean a push to make the Sportback body style more akin to the sporty 5-door coupes such as the A5 and A7 Sportbacks versus more of a 5-door Avant-ish style that the current car represents.

Could Audi build an A3 Avant? Yes, but the thought from Kacher is that this could undercut the A4 Avant and also be somewhat limited in sales except in Europe where the station wagon body style is still quite popular. However, Audi’s market research is pointing toward a positive consumer demand for some sort of allroad product. So, should Audi build more of an A3 Avant-based allroad or an allroad more in the vein of the current Sportback? We’d vote for the larger, leaving Sportbacks as more of a coupe-like option from bottom to top, but that’s just our opinion.

Then again, Audi could turn its allroad flavor on everything, including Sportbacks and even sedans… but that’s another conversation. For now, read more on this story at Automobile HERE.
