Spied: Audi Q1, Now Q2, at Nurburgring

Audi’s upcoming SUV set to slot in below the Q3 is nearing production. Once believed to be called Q1, the new small crossover is said now to be called Q2.

Why the name change? Audi always intended to call it Q2, but Alfa Romeo had registered that name and also Q4 years ago as a way to designate all-wheel drive and non-all-wheel drive cars. Alfa never used the names, but they didn’t necessarily want to hand them over to Audi either. Thus, this car was called Q1 when Rupert Stadler first made mention of it to the press.

Fast forward to Frankfurt, where Indian Autos Blog inquired about the Q1 with Audi R&D boss Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg. Hackenberg corrected him, referring to the crossover as Q2. Though not confirmed by either Audi or Alfa Romeo, it would appear from that comment by Hackenberg that the Q2 badge is now in Audi’s hands, and one might also assume the Q4 badge as well.

We’re going to assume for now that this crossover will be called Q2. It’s also worth mentioning that Hackenberg also confirmed the car will show up at Geneva in 2016 as a production model. For now, it’s also been caught testing at the Nurburgring.
