After three races this season, Mattias Ekstrom has climbed to the top of the podium three times with his Audi S1 EKS RX. This weekend he will look to win his fourth rallycross in a row, a feat that has never been accomplished in the World Rallycross Championship before.
“Looking at the results to date, we have absolutely no reason to complain,” said Ekström. “We haven’t always been the fastest but the hard work of my team has consistently paid off so far. At Hockenheim, we partied a little on Sunday but on Monday we immediately went back into racing mode.”
This weekend’s race in Mettet, Belgium, comes just a week after last weekend’s Hockenheim rallycross, so there’s very little turn around time for the team. Normally there are at least two weeks between rallycross races, if not more.
Fortunately for team EKS, its drivers love the track. Ekstrom won the race last year, and his teammate Toomas Heikkinen won it the two previous years.
“I really like the track,” said Heikkinen. “The layout differs from the other circuits – technically, it’s rather challenging, with fast zigzag turns, slow hairpin turns and a jump into the valley.”
The team, therefore, is champing at the bit, ready to race in Belgium and try to catch up to its main competition, PSRX Volkswagen Sweden.
“At Mettet,” says Ekstrom, “we’re going to race with full batteries.”
