Audi’s Mattias Ekstrom got off to a perfect start in the first round of the 2017 FIA World Rallycross Chamopionship.
The veteran driver and defending world champion finished first in Sunday’s final race, and in so doing earns himself the top spot on the drivers’ table as well as getting his team, EKSRX, in a tie for first in the team standings.
EKSRX is currently tied with VAG stablemates, PSRX, running two Volkswagen Polos this season. Both teams have 40 points after the first round of the 2017 season.
Ekstrom, though, has gotten out to an early lead in the drivers’ championship. With 29 points, he’s three points ahead of second place Timo Schreider, and eight to 10 points ahead of either Volkswagen driver.
The opening round of the 2017 season of the World Rallycross Championship was held in Barcelona, Spain. The drivers next head to Portugal for the second round of the championship on April 21st.
