Mattias Ekström to Pull Double Duty in DTM and FIA World RX at Hockenheim

Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline driver and multidiscipline phenom Mattias Ekström will be pulling double duty during the first weekend in May, competing in both DTM and the FIA World Rallycross Championship events.  A stranger to neither series, Ekström finished third last year in the DTM Driver’s Championship, and his EKSRX outfit finished 5th in the 2015 FIA World RX Team standings.

With Dr. Wolfgang Ulrich himself giving Ekström the go-ahead, the Swede will be transition between a naturally-aspirated 460hp Audi RS 5 DTM, and his 560hp Audi S1 Rallycross car, swapping a paved circuit for a track that’s roughly 40% gravel and 60% asphalt.  As if the change in car and surface wouldn’t be challenge enough, an extremely tight schedule won’t allow Ekström much time to adapt.  Should he make it to Sunday’s FIA World RX final, the time between that race and final DTM qualifying session will barley leave time for a change of fire suits.

So how will Mattias Ekström fare?  We’ll know for sure in just a few weeks.

Mattias Ekström has contested 161 DTM races in his career, celebrated 21 victories with Audi and seen just about everything in 15 years of competing in the popular touring car series. Still, the DTM opener at Hockenheim from May 6 to 8 will be a special weekend for the two-time DTM Champion. The versatile Swede is venturing a double start, competing in both the DTM and the FIA World Rallycross Championship (World RX).
