There’s been talk of Audi Sport taking the R18 e-tron quattro to the 2013 12 Hours of Sebring as one last hurrah for the returning 2012 victors before the P1 class is possibly no longer eligible on that iconic Floridian starting grid following next year’s planned ALMS/GRAND-AM merger. The team alluded to the move at their 2012 season finale in December and we heard from several Audi sources at this week’s North American International Auto Show that the decision had been made in the affirmative. We’d been about ready to go to press with simply that news when Sebring International Raceway went ahead and posted this season’s event poster to their Facebook page where you can download the full uncropped high-res version.
You don’t need to look very hard at this fisheye perspective painting by artist Roger Warrick to see the Audi R18 e-tron quattro sitting on the front of the grid. The Sebring Facebook page confirms Greaves Motorsports will enter with their LMP2, but there’s no mention of Audi beyond the painting itself. All that said, we’re certain Sebring already knows the answer since they’ve added the car to the image and our intel from Detroit just yesterday further confirms the news.
Another confirmation that we’re still looking for is that of Toyota. If Audi is the only WEC P1 entry on the grid then we’re guessing it is their race to lose. Not so if Toyota comes, as they’ve proven very worthy competition. On that subject, Toyota has made no mention of Sebring just yet and alas there’s not Toyota in the painting. Given these indicators, perhaps a conclusion can be drawn. Still, we’re hoping Toyota comes out and makes it a real battle.
