This weekend, six Audi R8 LMS GT3s will race for dominance at the Nürburgring 24 Hours while two R8 LMS GT4s are testing in their first ever live race.
The new R8 LMS GT4 is the latest customer race car from Audi Sport, and it bridges the gap between the affordable RS3 LMS and the extreme R8 LMS GT3. Introduced at the New York Auto Show earlier this year, the GT4 shares 60% of its parts with the roadgoing R8 and is intended for the gentleman racer, rather than pro teams.
A pro team will be running it this weekend, though, in the form of Audi Sport Team Phoenix, since the car isn’t for sale yet. The team will help the Audi put the car through its paces.
The RS3 LMS, similarly, ran its first race at the Nürburgring last year, albeit at a different event. It finished remarkably well, placing first in its class–despite not actually having been involved in the real competition. This year, three RS3 LMSs will be racing the event in the TCR class.
The six R8 LMS GT3s, meanwhile, count as a record for Audi, which has never run more R8s in the race.
“With over 160 participants on the biggest circuit in the world, the Nürburgring 24 Hours remains at the top of the customer events for us,” said Chris Reinke, Head of Audi Sport customer racing in a statement. “The great enthusiasm for our products confirms our direction of development.”
The race starts at 1:45 CEST (7:45 EDT) on Saturday. Audi will be livestreaming the race, so check in with their social media accounts for extensive updates and a link to the livestream.
