Audi is a fan of making big things reach speeds and Gs that they simply ought not to. The latest focus of the brand’s attentions is the Q8, a big SUV with more than just pretensions of pace.
Seen below on the Nurburgring, the big Audi challenges our now ancient assumptions about the SUV’s swaying, rocking, flip-happy nature. Instead it handles the Nordschleife’s high-speed corners with aplomb.
Expected in a couple trim levels, Audi has already trademarked the name SQ8 in most markets, so it seems it’s hoping to get real performance out of its flagship SUV.
So far, we’ve seen Q8 concepts with a 3.0-liter turbo V6 with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system producing 476 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, good for a 0-60 time of just 4.7 seconds. Rumors also suggest that a 4.0-liter V8 with 600 hp will also power it.
Jam packed full of new tech, including multiple touch screens and the potential for an Android-integrated infotainment system, the Q8 will be as much a technical showcase as it is a performance one.
Production will begin in 2018 with sales expected to begin later that year.
