In conjunction with the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Audi is presenting the new top model of its recently revised Q5 model series – the Audi SQ5 TDI. Boosted by two turbochargers, its 3.0 TDI produces a brawny 230 kW (313 hp) and 650 Nm (479.42 lb-ft) of torque between 1,450 and 2,800 rpm. Engineering and thus engineers have always had a high profile at Audi. Audi Sport engine czar Ulrich Baretzky is one such known quantity, part of the supporting cast in Truth in 24 and essential to Audi’s efforts at Le Mans over the years. Baretzky brought FSI to the R8 and TDI to every other Audi racing at Le Mans since. The German is passionate about design and technology and was thus the perfect person with whom to inquire about the Audi e-tron quattro as compared to the competition at Toyota. While on the subject, we also inquired with Mr. Baretzky about production possibilities derived from the R18 e-tron quattro, the new 2013 rules announced by the ACO and the controversial Delta Wing.

As part of our Le Mans week coverage we’ve been publishing several conversations we’ve had with key players at Audi Sport. This time around our subject is British-born driver Oliver Jarvis from the #4 Audi R18 ultra. Jarvis started his career at Audi in the DTM where he spent four years, so we start off by asking him to compare his DTM cars with the Audi R18 ultra. Jarvis also did a year at Le Mans with Kolles in an R10 TDI and so how he progressed from DTM and chose to move on to sportscar makes for interesting background. Looking very similar to a like RS 4 on display at Worthersee several weeks ago, it may very well have been the same. Other identifiable features shared with the Worthersee car besides the Sepang Blue paint are the 20-inch rotor-style alloys more commonly seen thus far on the RS 5.

As the first Swiss driver to ever win Le Mans, Marcel Fassler was greeted with a hero’s welcome last year when he and his teammates Andre Lotterer and Benoit Treluyer pulled off one of the most thrilling Le Mans wins in history. As a result, Marcel and his teammates returned to Le Mans not only as the victors but as one of the top-billed Audi factory driver teams at the wheel of an Audi R18 e-tron quattro. While in Le Mans and following the first day of practice and qualifying, the Fourtitude team caught up with Andre at the Audi Sport paddock facility and hit him up with questions about this year’s race, Toyota and the uber fast R18 e-tron quattro.
