Technically it’s a Mk1. Last weekend we headed to a small car show dubbed Mk1 Madness in Eastern Pennsylvania. This was essentially a show for VW enthusiasts and those of the very specific focus of the first-generation water-cooled cars like the Giugiaro-penned Golf I. We went to cover the show for our sister publication VWvortex though we were very pleasantly surprised to find an Audi on the field.

When it comes to enthusiast events, we’re pretty certain that Edition38 represents the pinnacle of the style-driven side of the scene where air suspensions, rare wheels and impeccable paint and interior handling are becoming the leading trends. While we see cars equipped and modified thusly at many shows throughout the season, we simply can’t deny the level at which those cars on display at Edition38 compare to rival events around the world. The Canadian enthusiast scene has always been one to watch. From the early days of revolutionary swaps and builds (looking at you RPI and Shawn van Neer) to today’s events like Eurokracy with intense house party feel amidst the fog of tire burnouts. This year marked the third year for the aforementioned Eurokracy Montreal, an event that’s quickly become Canada’s biggest VAG enthusiast gathering.

The 12th annual Big SoCal Euro event was another wild success, with thousands of predominantly European cars of all types piling into the Qualcomm Stadium parking lot for an afternoon of car heaven. This year’s event was even bigger and better than the last, and last year’s event set a pretty high bar for success.

Waterfest 2013: Event Report, Audi Perspective

The term ‘water’ in the name WaterFest refers to the passing of generations. At one time you could find shows for air-cooled Volkswagens on any given weekend throughout the summer. The newer and so-called ‘water-cooled’ cars coming out of Volkswagen and Audi made for a new generation of enthusiast owner and as such made a case for a split and a show all their own. Now in its 19th year, Waterfest not only signifies a truly mature and gargantuan segment, but one that has given birth to multiple generations in its own right.

Officially, the Worthersee tour begins next week. This enthusiast exposition in Austria is the largest of its kind and that’s when you’ll see a huge mass of attendees and an official presence by Audi and some of its Volkswagen Group brandmates. The week before… it’s more laid back and a time for the serious connoisseurs to roll into town without all of the burnouts and craziness that make up the actual show week. While we’ll have feet on the ground next week, we’ve enlisted a few of our friends who are veterans of the event to help tell the story of this pre-week.

Johnny Petrina stands just two steps the APR Project Reunion TT RS’ 11’oclock. You can’t see his eyes through his dark Oakley sunglasses, but the Alabama tuner’s Director of Operations is peering in the general direction of his other cars – an S4, an S7, an RS 5 and, oh yeah, a $350,000 Audi R8 GRAND-AM race car. The R8 he’s eyeing isn’t the car that just won second place in Lime Rock, because that car and most of the team are three states away in Lime Rock Connecticut. Depending on how you look at it, Johnny may be missing out… but then again maybe not. He’s got some seriously expensive Audi alloy at his fingertips and he’s spending the weekend in Ocean City, Maryland. Yup, it must be H20i. More…

This past weekend we attended Dubs on the Delaware in the Pennsylvania Poconos. Much like the East Coast show scene, Dubs on the Delaware reflects a strong trend of growth and an even stronger move toward European brand diversification. One of our favorite summer enthusiast events, DotD isn’t just about ‘dubs’ or Volkswagens. Audi is a an ever-growing component… and so too are others like BMW and Porsche. More…

With a venue located in Vermont, New England’s Wolfsgart show was a bit off of our radar . Billed mainly as an air-cooled VW and Porsche event, we wondered just how necessary it was to include on our summer show schedule. Now we look over the photo galleries and coverage over on Audiworld, and we’re second-guessing our choice. The show was actually open to all types of German cars, and that’s exactly what turned up.

Over a span of seven years, Cult Classic has grown by leaps and bounds but the same laid back, family friendly car atmosphere has remained. There are no scantily clad “models”, no drunken fools ruining it for everyone (in fact, no alcohol is allowed), and there’s no dubstep reverberating everywhere just in case that’s not your speed.
