Maybe it’s the recent bad press for the NFL or maybe it’s just a change after years of going with the same play, but Audi made Super Bowl news this year by sitting out the opportunity to run a commercial during the big game. Turns out BMW has decided to follow that strategy instead, running an ad for the i3 starring former Today Show hosts Katie Couric and Bryant Gumbel. While millions of viewers, hundreds of advertising agencies, and quite a few familiar companies will be flocking towards this year’s Super Bowl, Audi will not be one of them. We recently noticed a list of advertisers compiled by AdAge that notably didn’t include Audi. After a call to their headquarters, we were told they wouldn’t take part this year after not missing a game since 2008.

Audi of America today announced its return to the Super Bowl with a :60 spot featuring the all-new Audi A3. The seventh consecutive Super Bowl ad for the brand will air during the big game on February 2, 2014, in the first in-game break after the 3rd quarter kick-off, in the final position of the advertising break.

For the first time in its Super Bowl history, Audi will let audiences select the spot they want to see run during the big game. Audi will post three versions of its Super Bowl spot, each with a different ending, to its YouTube page and allow viewers to choose how they want the spot to end. The final spot will debut on YouTube in advance of the game and on CBS during Super Bowl XLVII in the first break after kickoff. Voting on YouTube will be open for 24 hours, beginning at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, January 24 and closing at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday, January 25.
