Just as Audi was re-entering the market from its post-war slumber, an idea was hatched to grow the appeal of the then-new 100 LS (C1) through a drop top Cabriolet. Osnabruck-based Karmann Coachworks had its own business already with Volkswagen, building special models like the Karmann Ghia though this would have marked new space for Audi. More…
How much would you pay for an Audi Coupe quattro. The cars are rare, but not that hard to find in varying levels stages of being worn out. If you’re lucky you’ll find a well-kept example or some sort of S2 or RS 2 swap. But what about a pristine one? What if you found one with about 17,000 miles on it that looked practically the same as the day it rolled off the showroom floor. What would you pay? $22,000? More…
Be it design language, a technology theme or nomenclature, Audi is today one of the most consistent automotive brands on the market. There was a day though that Audi was not so well defined. It was the 1970s, the brand had both been freshly relaunched and had changed hands from Mercedes-Benz to Volkswagen. A rebirth in America was also in the cards and along came the Fox. More…
Just over 75 years ago, on January 28 1938, the racing world lost one of the most legendary drivers in the history of the sport. Star of the Auto Union Silver Arrow Squad, Bernd Rosemeyer had won the titles of European Champion, German Champion and German Bergmeister by 1936 at the age of 26. Two [...] More…
Back in 1991 Audi was getting ready to re-set the technological bar for aluminum structures. A prototype looking a lot like an Audi 200 was the picture of stealth in Ingolstadt, going unnoticed by the press as it was driven by engineers who were in on the secret. The public however, would come to learn Audi’s intentions at the Tokyo Motor Show though when Audi pulled the wraps off of the super exotic Avus concept. More…
We missed our #ThrowbackThursday post this week because we were busy working on our coverage of the Audi R8 Forschungsauto 2012 e Performance Prototype. Now in need of an entrant for our weekly #FotoshopFriday post as well, we had an idea. Where we’d intended to post photos of the original Forschunsauto 2000 concept from the [...] More…
This week’s #ThrowbackThursday jumps back to the early days of quattro and focuses on one of the rarest B2s around – the 80 quattro 2-door. No, this car wasn’t turbocharged or box-flared like the more reknowned ‘ur quattro’, but it may even be more rare. Back in the days of the B2, 2-door notchback coupes [...] More…
For this week’s #ThrowbackThursday, we’re reaching back over a decade to 2001. The first RS-car produced by quattro GmbH was on the market and making waves with its 375 bhp Cosworth-tuned 2.7-liter biturbo V6 and wagon-only body configuration. quattro GmbH went even further by introducing the RS 4 Sport at the Essen Motor Show in late 2000. We’ve been looking for a reason to publish this photo we’ve found from Audi’s archives. We need to do a little more research to determine the time and the place, but #ThrowbackThursday seemed like excuse enough to run it on the site. What you see here is a B1 Audi 80 (known as Audi Fox in the USA) catching more than its fair share of air while rallying. These were the days before the legendary quattro, and the car appears sponsored by Audi tuning firm Abt. More…
