1:87 scale cars are tiny. Matcbox/Hotwheels cars are larger in comparison, though in scale detail still goes to the 1:87 since that’s also the same scale as HO model trains. One of our favorite manufacturers is Herpa, the German manufacturer of many things tiny and also an official supplier to the Audi Collection.

For Audi, the cutting edge is a goal derived from tradition. Sportsmanship, performance and driving pleasure elements unite the past, present and future for the brand of the four rings, both on the road and in motor racing. For this reason, Audi celebrates its origins for the 17th rear in a row at the Gran Premio Nuvolari as main sponsor, also choosing the classic car event as a showcase for the Audi TT Nuvolari Limted Edition, a numbered limited series sports coupe and icone of design in the automotive world. During the presentation at the Audi TT launch last week, Audi’s moderator began a rehearsed Q&A with Ingolstadt’s chief of development Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg by mentioning a “rumored TT-based concept car for Paris”. Given this was no question by a journalist and instead pre-planned by a PR manager, Audi surely grabbed our attention.

As style icons go, the air around cars like the Volkswagen Beetle and Porsche 911 is a heady space… space also occupied by cars like the Audi TT. These automobiles are clearly defined and ardently loved. Redesign them in a less than authentic way and risk watering down something that truly defines a car company. This is what Audi considered as it moved to envision the latest Audi TT coupe. More…

Earlier today we reported on the new TT Illustrated magazine published by Audi to coincide with the launch of the latest third-generation TT range. For enthusiasts, the magazine is a veritable treasure trove of little information. In particular, the story whereby designer Freeman Thomas returns to the studios of the Audi Design Team grabbed us not just for the content, but also for the design drawings shared from Thomas’ original notebooks.

It seems Audi’s been landing awards for its internal corporate magazines quite a bit over the past few years. Maybe it shouldn’t be a surprise then that they’ve published a beautifully made coffee table magazine titled TT Illustrated to help bring this new third-generation TT and TTS coupe to market.

Seemingly near the very same time that journalists began to take a first crack at the wheel of the new TT and TTS models, test mules of the TT Roadster were spotted at a Nurburgring test day. The sighting would suggest that the new drop-top version is nearing its auto show debut and sources are telling us that debut will likely be Paris.

Planned test routes took drivers into the nearby mountains, including a long winding road north to the Ascari circuit near the town of Roda. On location at Ascari, Audi offered up many displays including technical components and then this static and highly optioned grey Audi TTS coupe.

That there will be a TT Roadster or even what it will eventually look like isn’t much of a mystery. The Audi TT had always had a drop top version and coupe versions of the TT and TTS dropped as early as Geneva last spring. Even still, we’ve yet to see the soft top variant of this new TT Mk3 and, as such, its presence at the Nurburgring in the form of a test mule is definitely news.
